Why refurbished airline furniture is a sustainable option

Looking for a modern addition to your interior that is also sustainable? At TRAP Trading, we re-use and resell airline furniture: sustainable, circular items with a small ecological footprint. We believe in re-using materials as much as possible instead of buying new items all the time. Oftentimes, used airline furniture has a lot more life in it, even after leaving an airplane. Besides, did you know that airline furniture, like inflight trolleys or galley carts, is actually made from very sustainable materials? Find out all about the sustainability of inflight furniture for your home or business in this blog.

Re-using airline equipment means less waste

We care about our impact on the world around us. On a yearly basis, thousands of pieces of cheap furniture end up being thrown away, when they can easily be revamped and re-used. That takes its toll on our environment and is a big waste of natural resources. Re-using and refurbishing airline trolleys and other airline equipment is a great way to avoid unnecessary waste. Old airline trolleys get a second life with us as beautiful pieces of furniture, instead of ending up in landfill. That way, we at TRAP Trading are doing our bit for our planet and for future generations to come.

Airline equipment made from sustainable materials

The airlines we work with are also becoming more and more aware of their environmental impact. That’s why many big airlines use sustainable materials like aluminium in the production of their inflight equipment. Aluminium is sturdy and, more importantly, incredibly lightweight. Lighter materials on board mean that the plane itself is also lighter, leading to less fuel consumption and gas emmissions. Using these kinds of lightweight materials can therefore make flying more sustainable.

Aside from that, aluminium is 100% recyclable, which means that it can be re-used countless of times. As of today, nearly 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use – that’s because recycling it uses about 95% less energy than producing new aluminium. Drawers for airline trolleys are usually made from recycled polypropylene, which is generally considered to be one of the most sustainable plastics out there. It’s somewhat biodegradable and has a relatively small carbon footprint, adding to the overall sustainability of airline furniture.

Sustainably re-using airline equipment

We believe in re-using instead of replacing. Not only is most airline equipment too unique and beautiful to simply discard as trash; re-using it also helps avoid unnecessary waste and use of raw materials. As airlines focus more and more on sustainability, choosing lightweight, recyclable materials for their equipment, our stock of used airline furniture also becomes more and more environmentally friendly. Whether you’re an aviation collector or someone looking for unique, sustainable furniture for your home: discover the world of re-using airline furniture with TRAP Trading.

Customized airline furniture: these are the standards and sizes

At TRAP Trading, we know all about airline furniture. We offer new and used airline trolleys from big airlines and can even customize trolleys for collectors, businesses and private buyers alike. We mainly offer ATLAS and KSSU trolleys, as well as the occasional ACE trolley. But what exactly is the difference? Read on to find out exactly what sets these different types of trolleys apart.

Customised airline trolley

ATLAS and KSSU trolleys: the main differences

The most common airline trolley on the market in terms of size is ATLAS. Approximately 80% of all airlines use this type of trolley. The name comes from Alitalia, TAP, Lufthansa, Air France and Sabena. KSSU trolleys also owe their name to the airlines that use them: KLM, Swissair, SAS Scandinavian Airlines and UTA. Whereas ATLAS and KSSU trolleys have rougly the same width and hight, there is a difference in terms of the depth of the trolleys. These are the standard sizes for full- and half-size trolleys:

  • ATLAS full-size trolley: 31 x 81 x 103 cm
  • KSSU full-size trolley: 30.5 x 85 x 103 cm
  • ATLAS half-size trolley: 30 x 40 x 103 cm
  • KSSU half-size trolley: 30.5 x 42.5 x 103 cm

When you buy an ATLAS trolley, any accessories like drawers or doors should also come from the same brand. A half-size KSSU trolley is about 2.5cm deeper than an ATLAS cart, and the full-size trolley has about 4 cm of extra depth compared to ATLAS. Due to these specific sizes, a KSSU drawer will not fit in an ATLAS cart. The same goes the other way around. Thanks to our expertise in aviation furniture, TRAP trading can help you make sure that you’re purchasing airline equipment and accessories with the correct measurements and sizes.
